Exemptions from the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL)
Some developments are exempt from paying the CIL. These include:
- minor developments
- self-builds
- residential annexes or extensions
- social housing
- charities
See the Planning Portal for details of the exemptions and relief available and the forms to use to claim.
All completed claim forms should be emailed to cil@arun.gov.uk
Exemption is not automatic – you must apply for it before you start work. In most cases an exemption cannot be granted after work has started.
Changes to your exemption or relief
Where an exemption or relief has been granted, and then a disqualifying event occurs, you must notify us, in writing, giving 14 days advance notice.
A CIL demand notice will be issued detailing the payment due. If you fail to notify us of a disqualifying event, we will give the relevant persons 28 days’ notice before taking action.
Discretionary relief
Please note that we do not currently offer the following:
- discretionary charitable relief
- discretionary relief for exceptional circumstances
- discretionary social housing relief
