Street collections
If you want to collect money or sell items in a public place for charity within the Arun district you will need a street collection permit.
You do not need a permit for:
- a collection held inside a pub or club (but if travelling from one pub to another you will need a house to house collection licence)
- a collection inside a supermarket, cinema, theatre, private dwelling, works or business premises
- the selling of items in any street or public place where the items you sell are for the purposes of earning a living
Permits are free but you must submit any applications to us at least one month before the date of the collection. We can reduce this notice period to 14 days, but only under exceptional circumstances.
If your collection involves a performance or will cause an obstruction you must apply to West Sussex County Council for permission and this permit or written instruction must be included in your application to us.
We normally only allow one collection at a time in any area.
Charities should supply us with their charity registration number, and we may check these details with the Charity Commissioner.
One month after the collection you must submit a statement of return giving us the details of the proceeds of the collection.
