World Wetland's day - 2 February 2024

World Wetlands day Today, 2 February, officially marks World Wetland day.

The arun district is lucky to have several wetlands which residents and visitors can explore. Our parks host numerous wetland habitats, including Brookfield Park, Mewsbrook Park and Bersted Brooks. More information on these can be found on our website: Parks, play areas and nature reserves | Arun District Council

We also have the wonderful Arundel Wetland Centre within our boundary. This facility has an amazing amount of fun activities and learning opportunities for the whole family. More information can be found here: Arundel Wetland Centre | WWT.

Wetland habitats are critical for many species with about 40% of the world’s plants and animals dependent on this habitat. These also provide important mitigation and adaption to climate change (mitigation means preventing or reducing the emission of greenhouse gases (GHG) into the atmosphere to make the impacts of climate change less severe and help capture CO2 from the atmosphere and adaptation is the process of adjusting to the current and future effects of climate change). Sadly 90% of the worlds wetlands have been degraded since the 1700s and they are lost at three times the rate of forests.
