This Girl Can Week - Vicky Rhodes

Cllr. Vicky Rhodes

This week is This Girl Can Week, the campaign encourages women and girls of all shapes, sizes, abilities and backgrounds to get active. Throughout the week we will be sharing stories from our female Councillors. Today we hear from Cllr Vicky Rhodes.

" I’m addicted to keeping fit! I do 4 – 5 classes a week at Lanes gym in Rustington (mostly at 6.30am) and do epic bike rides at weekends, including The Southdown Way in a day.  I’m out riding trails across the Surrey Hills with a bunch of guys every weekend too, pushing myself to keep up with them on extreme rides.

I joined a gym the day my son started school 27 years ago as I was painfully thin, having gone through a acrimonious divorce I had been wasting away. I’m sure there aren’t many women who join a gym to put on weight. I was soon addicted to this and was going to the gym every morning and lifting weights, I soon became known as “her, who squats more than her body weight”.

Throughout the last 27 years if I have been ill and unable to exercise, it has made me feel very down and miserable. The thought of not exercising fills me with dread, exercise energises me and makes me feel good about myself.

I’m planning on cycling to the top of Mount Snowdon this summer, determination will get me up there."
