This Girl Can Week - Amanda Worne

This week is This Girl Can Week, the campaign encourages women and girls of all shapes, sizes, abilities and backgrounds to get active. Throughout the week we will be sharing stories from our female Councillors. Today we hear from Cllr Amanda Worne.
"I suffered a nasty cycling accident in 2015 in which I nearly died. Thank goodness I didn't but I sustained injuries that meant I would never walk again and I had to adjust to living life in a wheelchair. Prior to my accident I was very active and loved competing in running races and triathlons.
After my accident I realised how important keeping active in a wheelchair was both physically and mentally. I still took part in running races and made several wheelchair friendly for the first time. I also took up horse riding and up until Covid was riding once a week.
I enjoy going out and walking/ wheeling with my Jack Russell Max and when the weather is nice I enjoy nothing more than a bike ride on my handbike along the promenade to buy an ice cream and watch the sun dancing and sparkling on the waves. I have also been scuba diving in the Red Sea in Egypt since my accident and have a PADI qualification in deep sea diving.
One of my greatest sporting achievements has definitely been when I wheeled a DOUBLE Marathon for charity totalling 53 miles in 24 hours! Another fundraiser I did for charity was doing 20 pushups a day in Lockdown between Nov and Dec in 2020.
Keeping active is important whoever you are and I feel so lucky to be able to do all the things I can still do."
