Storm and weather update - 2 Nov 23

storm and weather update

It looks like we have come through the worst of the storm and the impact, although significant in some areas of our district, is not as severe as feared.

Our councillors, contractors and staff have been working round the clock for the last few days to support each other and key partners and agencies in the work to deal with the flooding we have seen and also the preparation and consequences of Storm Ciaran - assessing storm damage, clearing trees and working with West Sussex Highways, the Environment Agency and other agencies with regards flooding issues.

The latest from the Met Office states that low pressure sat more south than expected, which reduced wind speed slightly, with the strongest winds centred offshore.

MET Office Amber wind warning remains for south coast area, expiring at 12:00 (Thursday 2 November). Yellow rain warning remains in place for Thursday. Friday is expected to be fair. Next band of rain due on Saturday morning with heavy showers and gusty winds – potential for low impact warnings TBC.

Although the main storm seems to have moved on, there are still some things we can do to be safe.

Please avoid unnecessary travel, significant disruption is likely on both roads and rail. If you do have to drive, take extra care on the roads, and avoid driving through flood water - there may be hidden hazards and it may be deeper than it looks. Check public transport services before setting out on your journey.

Stay away from the water’s edge and avoid coastal areas most likely to be impacted by the storm

Stay aware  and prepared for exceptionally strong winds and the threat of flooding. Ensure doors, windows and loose objects are securely fastened
