Staying safe this Christmas time - 2023

Safe ChristmasThese crime prevention tips from the Safer Arun Partnership aim to reduce the risk of residents becoming a victim of crime over the festive season.

Don’t leave valuables on show

Do not leave wrapped presents or your expensive gadgets visible from windows at home. It takes seconds for a burglar to see if there is anything worth stealing. Laptops, wallets, purses and car keys should all be kept out of sight.

Keep your home safe

Most burglaries happen when homes are empty, so leaving a light on or using a timer switch so lights come on when you’re not in can deter burglars. Make sure that doors and windows are closed and locked when you’re out.

Lock your car

Make sure your vehicle is always locked whenever you leave it unattended. Do not leave valuable items and Christmas presents in the car.

Alcohol

Know your limits and pace yourself. Everyone deserves a good night out but drinking too much can lead to anti-social behaviour which ruins the night for you and others.

Don’t drink and drive

Drink driving ruins lives. If you drive, stick to soft drinks. Remember that alcohol may mean you are over the limit the next morning after a night drinking - don’t drive until you know that it is safe to do so.

Stay safe online

Always use a secure payment service if you are internet shopping and never give out personal or financial information when you are connected to public Wi-Fi. For online safety advice visit www.getsafeonline.org

Guard against bogus callers

Don’t let anyone into your home who you aren’t expecting. Genuine callers won’t mind if you ask to check their identification or call the company if you are unsure. Be wary of unexpected phone callers who ask for personal information. Report suspicious incidents to the Police by calling 101.

Domestic abuse

Sadly, Christmas can be a stressful time for those suffering domestic abuse. Please don’t suffer in silence, call the 24 hour freephone National Domestic Abuse Helpline – 0808 2000 247 or 999 in an emergency.
