School children become sun smart thanks to Arun Wellbeing | Latest news

 

School children received helpful hints from Arun Wellbeing on staying safe in the sun during the summer months.

There was a true or false quiz which tested the children’s knowledge of skin cancer, sun cream and when people get sunburnt.

Sarah Day, Arun Wellbeing Project Development Officer, and Tom Howell, Arun Wellbeing Active Coordinator, gave a short talk on sun safety when they attended the Littlehampton, Rustington, Arundel and Climping Junior Youth Council hosted by St Mary’s Church of England School at Climping Village Hall.

The pupils designed their own baseball caps which contained tips for staying safe in the sun; they took away free samples of factor 50 sun cream and also tried out coloured nose sun block too. 

One of the children said: “I wasn’t putting on sun cream when I went out into the sun, although I will now. I don’t want to get skin cancer.”

Councillor Paul Wotherspoon, Arun District Council Cabinet Member for Community Safety, said: “Skin cancer is a deadly disease. It has been proven that as you age the risk of skin cancer increases so it is vitally important to educate young people about the dangers of sunburn and the steps they can take to protect themselves when they are enjoying sunny weather.

“I would encourage everyone to take a few moments to visit the Arun Wellbeing website for some handy hints for staying safe in the sunshine.”

Sue Bingham, Lead Learner with responsibility for Information Communication Technology at River Beach Primary School, said: “The children enjoyed the presentation given by Arun Wellbeing and picked up some valuable tips on staying safe in the sun.

“It is great the children were given copies of the true or false quiz because not only can they remember the advice they can also share what they have learnt with friends and family.”
