VE stands for Victory in Europe Day, and marks the day when Nazi Germany formally surrendered to the Allied forces, ending World War II in Europe. It was celebrated on May 8, 1945.
This anniversary falls on a Thursday, with celebrations taking place on the day and the weekend that follows.
