New improved planning compliance strategy gets the seal of approval

We are updating the way we deal with planning enforcement cases across the district.

After consulting with parishes and town councils we have revised our strategy so that we can investigate alleged breaches of planning control in a more efficient and transparent way.

Our planning enforcement service is here to investigate if the planning rules have been broken and take appropriate action if it is necessary to do so.

These might include breaching conditions attached to a planning permission, not building in accordance with approved plans or unauthorised work to a listed building.

As the council receives more planning enforcement reports than it has the resources to deal with, there is a need to prioritise action and the Compliance Strategy 2022 will allow us to do that by streamlining the service.

Approved by the council’s Planning Committee on 9 December 2022, the strategy will now come into force and will be downloaded onto the council’s website as soon as possible.

An information leaflet will also be launched that helps to signpost anyone wishing to complain to documents explaining more about what can and cannot be objected to. For example, the public cannot object to a structure if it is allowed under permitted development.

Councillor Terence Chapman, Chair of the Planning Committee at Arun District Council, said:

“The Compliance Strategy 2022 is the result of more than a year’s work looking at how we can improve the service we offer to our residents and make it quicker and more straightforward for everyone involved. It will allow us to free up planning officers to look at the priority cases and offer residents more guidance on what may and may not be considered a breach of planning consent. The parishes have been closely involved with shaping the strategy and we will continue to work with them in order to continuously improve the effectiveness of our compliance service.”
