Text: National Fish and Chip Day Thursday 6 June 2024 in collaboration with D-DAY 80 anniversary. In the background images of fish and chipsThis day is usually celebrated on the first Friday of June, however this year, to honour all those involved in the D-Day landings, the largest naval, land and air operation in history, National Fish and Chip Day has moved from its traditional Friday slot to today.

National fish and chip day marks its ninth year in 2024, and today we recognise the huge importance of fish and chips during World War I and II. To keep up morale, the British Government safeguarded the supply of fish and potatoes during both these wars. This was ‘the’ British national dish and the meal was a vital ingredient of the war effort.

It is in no doubt that fish and chips are ‘the’ National dish of Great Britain - a meal recognised as British all over the world.
