Manage your money with tips from Arun District Council

If you are feeling the financial pinch following Christmas and New Year then you may wish to learn of money saving tips from Arun District Council.

Our debt page has some helpful information, including a booklet called “Managing Your Money”. This includes information about budgeting and contacting creditors to explain financial problems.

Advice includes making paying your rent a priority to help keep people in their own home, spotting “loan sharks” and a range of options to obtain support.

Arun District Council offers advice on benefits changes and the introduction of Universal Credit, a payment for people in or out of work, which now sees some people being paid in a monthly lump sum. Furthermore, the council employs a Money Advisor to offer support to those struggling to pay their rent.

Tim Nightingale, Money Advisor at Arun District Council, said: “We aim to identify people who have financial problems and who have not sought support for themselves, or have been unaware that help is available.

“I work with them to make sure they are maximising their income, prioritising their spending and managing their debts effectively.

“I am pleased to have the opportunity to work for the council to prevent homelessness and assist people in financial difficulties.”

Before joining the council, Tim worked for the charity Shelter for five-and-a half years as a Legal Advisor, where he supported people on a range of housing and homelessness issues.

He attended possession proceedings at Chichester, Horsham and Worthing County Courts, where he provided free legal advice to help people keep their homes. Tim can be contacted via Tim.Nightingale@arun.gov.uk

Councillor Roger Elkins, Cabinet Member for Housing at Arun District Council, said: “I am pleased the council is able to offer this free advice to those who need it most so that they stay out of debt and manage their money better.

“This service fits in well with Arun’s priority of supporting those who need our help.”
