Human Rights Day – 10 December 2024
Today is Human Rights Day - every person deserves dignity and respect and this day marks the importance of human dignity, equality for all, regardless of nationality, race, or creed.
It's a day to reflect on the progress made in promoting human rights and to highlight the challenges that persist and it also honours individuals and organisations working tirelessly to protect and advocate human rights.
Celebrated annually on December 10, it commemorates the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948.
The UK has its own legal framework for human rights, primarily governed by the Human Rights Act 1998, which incorporates the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) into domestic law. This Act provides protections for rights such as the right to life, freedom from torture, and the right to a fair trial.
