Freedom Leisure is reducing its carbon footprint in Arun

Freedom Leisure is reducing its carbon footprint in Arun At Freedom Leisure we’ve been taking action to reduce our environmental impact for a while now. But with COP26 in progress and so much in the media at the moment we thought now would be a good opportunity to shout about how ‘Actively Green’ we are.

The combined heat and power unit at Littlehampton Wave helps us generate our own low carbon electricity on site, and we achieve further efficiencies by using the heat that would normally be wasted to heat the pool water.

Arun Leisure Centre underwent a major capital project shortly after the contract started in 2016, including upgrades to the air handling systems and LED lighting throughout. This cut electricity consumption by nearly 30%. Since then, through a programme of targeted housekeeping initiatives, all of the leisure sites within the Arun District Council contract have seen year on year energy and carbon reductions, and this is very much set to continue with reduction targets set every year.

Next on the agenda, we’re looking at solar panels on the roof to generate electricity to supply the centre. The South facing roof space here is ideal and would help us to reduce our carbon footprint by another 100 tonnes CO2 per year.
