FloodSmart – Prepare now for tomorrow. Before, during and after a flood

Text: FloodSmart - Prepare now for tomorrow. Top third of image is a white background with blue raindrops, falling onto waves and a plain medium blue colour two thirds at the base of image. Arun District Council logo top right corner. We have posted about being prepared and what you can do in advance, and you will find full details on our website, but here's a quick checklist...

  • emergency grab bag - does it have everything you need in case you need to evacuate? (link to previous post on what to put in a grab bag)
  • are all your electronic devices fully charged?
  • have you moved all you can to a higher level or arranged to, or taken expensive or precious items to a family member or friend?
  • do you have waterproof and warm dry clothing and shoes?
  • have you advised friends/family of the situation?

What to do if it happens?

  • follow evacuation orders
  • don't walk, swim, or drive through floodwater - six inches of fast-flowing water can knock you over and two feet of water can float a car
  • stay indoors, and follow local authorities or emergency service updates
  • if you need to be evacuated, details of where to go will be provided - the local council will implement their emergency procedures and a rest centre will be there for you, your family and pets
  • avoid contact with floodwater - it may be contaminated with sewage
  • wait for official word that it's safe to return home, avoid contact with floodwater, and inspect your property for damage
