Felpham Relief Road now open

Motorists in Bognor Regis are feeling relieved now that a new road has officially opened.
Chairman of Arun District Council, Councillor Andy Cooper, Arun District Council Leader Councillor Mrs Gillian Brown and Councillor Ricky Bower, Cabinet Member for Planning and Infrastructure, were among those present at the opening of the £28 million Bognor Regis to Felpham Relief Road.
Barratt Homes have funded the 1.86 mile single carriageway as well as supporting the construction of 800 new homes south of the road and around 50 jobs have been supported as part of the project.
Councillor Mrs Brown said: “Motorists in Bognor Regis are already feeling the significant benefit of the new relief road.
“It is shortening journey times for residents and businesses in Bognor Regis and the surrounding area and is making it far easier to visit and do business with Bognor Regis.
“The opening of this road is great news as it comes at a time when Arun District Council is supporting schemes to revitalise Bognor Regis to encourage businesses to locate to and expand in the town and tourists to visit this well-known seaside resort.”
John O’Brien, West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways, said: “We are expecting up to 20,000 vehicles per day to use the new road.
“We estimate that 40 per cent of motorists who use the existing road network around Bognor Regis will take the relief road instead.
“This will significantly reduce congestion and delays in and around Felpham and the Butlin’s and Hotham Park areas of Bognor Regis.”
Following five years of construction the road was officially opened on Friday, 4 March.
Work to build the road included the construction of a 0.5Km long viaduct spanning the Bognor Regis to Barnham railway line and the river Aldingbourne.
