Drone rules and regulations - how to get off to a flying start

Drones were one of the must-have presents this Christmas with retailers reporting they were – metaphorically speaking – flying off the shelves.

Also known as unmanned aircraft, drones are flying robots which can be operated by remote control or fly by themselves due to in-build software.

Often associated with the military, drones are also used for traffic monitoring, search and rescue and fire fighting – but also for fun.

However, there is a list of dos and don’ts associated with owning a drone, including safety advice and getting permission from your local authority if you
wish to film for commercial purposes.

A ‘Dronecode’ has been launched by the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), in conjunction with NATS and pilots' union, BALPA, which includes these key points;

• Make sure you can see your drone at all times and don't fly higher than 400 feet
• Always keep your drone away from aircraft, airports and airfields
• Drones must not be flown within 50 metres of people, vehicles, buildings or structures or over congested areas / large gatherings such as  concerts and sports events

If you intend to use an unmanned aircraft for any kind of commercial activity, you must get permission from the Civil Aviation Authority, or you could face prosecution. For more details, visit www.caa.co.uk/uas

Before using your drone to film at, or for, an event on any Arun District Council owned or controlled land, such as parks, recreation grounds and open spaces, you will also need to apply for permission from the council and fees may apply. For more guidance, contact events@arun.gov.uk or call 01903 737920.

For more information on operating your drone safely please see the publication and short video links below from the Civil Aviation Authority [CAA].
