Dogs in open spaces and on beaches...what do you think?

Arun District Council is reviewing the rules for dogs in public spaces and wants to hear from residents.

A public consultation has been launched today, 3 July 2023, to seek your views on plans to amend and continue the current Public Space Protection Order for dogs in open spaces.

We are proposing that the current Arun District Council PSPOs for Dogs, which expires later this year, be extended for a further three years until 2026.

The proposed changes are designed to ‘fine-tune’ the existing order and are based upon feedback from the public and our first-hand experience in managing land and enforcement issues in relation to dog controls.

They include allowing dogs on Place St Maur (and other future water play areas), and in Discovery Garden in Hotham Park, both in Bognor Regis and West Beach Board Walk (off Rope Walk), Littlehampton, as long as they are on leads under control.

Failure to comply with the conditions of the Order can result in a fine or fixed penalty notice.

The consultation survey will run from 3 July until 31 July 2023

Councillor Sue Wallsgrove Arun District Council’s Environment Committee Chair said:

“These orders are in place to ensure that everyone can enjoy the many beautiful open spaces and beaches we have in the district. We are encouraging as many people as possible, whether you are a dog owner or not, to complete the survey and share your views to help shape the new Order.”
