Register as a keeper of less than 50 poultry or other captive birds

Trading Standards are reminding all West Sussex Poultry Keepers of new requirements coming into force today.

On 19 March 2024, all GB administrations announced new measures to better protect birds from the risk of avian influenza outbreak.

There is now a requirement in England and Wales for all bird keepers to register their birds on the Kept Bird Register. This applies, regardless of how many are kept, even if they are pets.

By registering, bird keepers will receive important updates relevant to them. This will help to limit the spread of potential disease outbreaks, such as avian influenza and Newcastle disease and will help the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) to manage potential disease outbreaks.

Keepers in England and Wales who are currently registered do not need to re-register.

Keepers of Psittaciformes (such as parrots, cockatiels and budgerigars) and Passriformes (such as jays and finches) do not need to register if these birds are housed on the premises fully within a dwelling or within a bird house with no access to open air or outdoor spaces.

Bird keepers in England and Wales who have not already registered should do so now. Please visit the link below for more details and to register online: www.gov.uk/guidance/register-as-a-keeper-of-less-than-50-poultry-or-other-captive-birds
