Cold Weather/Snow and Ice information

Ice and snow to do With some cold and potentially icy or snowy weather on the way, we have the following information to share, which may be useful for you and any vulnerble people you know:

  • follow advice on whether it is safe to drive. If you must travel, be prepared for possible disruption, plan ahead and ensure all ice and snow is cleared from your vehicle. Be aware of hidden hazards when walking and driving through snow, ice, or flood water
  • keep warm – wear layers of clothing and shoes with a good grip
  • get advice if you feel unwell - seek advice from a GP or pharmacist. If it's urgent but not an emergency call NHS 111 or visit 111.nhs.uk
  • take up the opportunity for flu and COVID-19 booster vaccinations when offered to protect yourself and others
  • heat your home to at least 18C (65F). Check your heating is in good working order and keep your home safe from fire if using traditional methods of heating your home
  • find information on gritting routes and grit bins, and any unavoidable closures to schools, libraries, or recycling centres from your local council
  • if the power goes off, you can call Freephone 105 to report it or seek information
  • contact your Utility Service Providers for further information about their Priority Services Registers, which provides a free support service that makes sure extra help is available to customers who have specific communication, access or safety needs
  • check on elderly or vulnerable family members, friends or neighbours
  • StreetLink – you can help people sleeping rough by connecting them to local support services https://thestreetlink.org.uk/
  • only call 999 in the event of a life-threatening or serious emergency
  • tune into local radio for the latest weather updates, information and advice from local services
