Clean for the Queen with Arun District Council

A national campaign to get people to spruce up their communities in time for Her Majesty the Queen’s 90th birthday is being backed by Arun District Council.

The main ‘Clean for the Queen’ weekend will run from Friday 4 to Sunday 6 March, but events will be running throughout the whole of March in time for the Queen’s birthday celebrations in April.

This is set to be the biggest community-led clean up the country has ever seen and Arun residents, schools and community groups who want to organise a clean-up are encouraged to sign up to the national campaign.

To help with the local clean-ups, Arun District Council is offering advice to event organisers, along with official Clean for the Queen refuse sacks and free loan of a limited number of litter picker sticks, hi-vis jackets and gloves on a first-come, first-served basis.

The council will also collect the filled bags of litter from local events, providing this is arranged in advance. Groups wishing to take part should organise their own risk assessments and insurance.

Councillor Terence Chapman, Arun District Council’s Cabinet Member for Environmental Services, said: “When Queen Elizabeth II came to the throne, litter was not the problem it is today. Food packaging, plastic bottles, chewing gum and cigarette butts have all contributed to a growing menace which affects our streets, countryside and our wildlife.

“Clean for the Queen is a great way of reminding people not to litter, but will also bring communities together and hopefully inspire a real sense of pride in our neighbourhoods.”
