Arun’s 10-year tree planting strategy launched

Arun District Council 10-year Tree Planting Strategy Volunteers and councillors gathered at Bersted Park in glorious sunshine, to kick-start the council’s 10-year tree planting strategy.

On Friday 25 February the skies were blue and the breeze was sharp as Chair of the council, Cllr Jim Brooks donned his wellies to officially launch this important programme. Cllr Brooks was joined by Cllr Shaun Gunner, Leader of Arun District Council, along with fellow district and county councillors, officers and many willing and very able volunteers.

Cllr Brooks said:

“Tree planting in its various forms can play an important role in habitat creation and enhancement of biodiversity or provide valuable opportunity for shade and carbon uptake.”

Cllr Gunner said:

“It is great to join together to be out in the fresh air, working hard to do something positive and to meet new and like-minded people, willing to give up their time for the good of our environment. The knowledge and experience of the volunteer groups attending was much appreciated and with 33,000 trees to plant, the more ‘hands on deck’ the better!”

The trees planted were mainly native whips to enhance perimeter wildlife corridors and add further biodiversity value to the site, along with some standard Oak trees which will hopefully be towering specimens long into the future.
