Arun Leisure Centre - new changing village officially opens

WALC changing villagee are excited to announce that the new Changing Village at Arun Leisure Centre (ALC) in Bognor Regis is now open to the public.

The changing rooms dated back to when the swimming pool was built in 1994 and needed some major modernisation.

Extensive renovations have been made to the male and female wet changing rooms to transform them into a village change area. The space now offers changing cubicles ranging in size from individual to family. The toilet, shower area and poolside changing rooms have also been updated.

In addition, the project includes several energy efficiency improvements such as, reducing the volume of air to be heated and cooled, the use of LED lamps, and the option to install photovoltaic panels, that can later be extended with additional panels.

The new facilities include a Changing Places Toilet – a larger than standard accessible toilet with extra features, designed for assisted use so those with additional needs can change safely and in comfort.

This facility gives anyone who needs it, more space and the right equipment, including a height adjustable changing bed, a peninsular toilet (space either side for a wheelchair or carer), adjustable sink, accessible shower and a celling hoist and has been included as part of our program to deliver Changing Places Toilets (CPTs) in the district.

Along with new cubicles and lockers in the family changing area, there’s a new foyer area where customers are asked to sit and remove their footwear before entering the changing rooms to help keep the new facilities clean.

Councillor Carol Birch, Chair of the Housing and Wellbeing Committee at Arun District Council, said:

“It is fantastic to see the new changing rooms completed and open to the public. We were very pleased to be able to include a Changing Places toilet, which will make the popular leisure centre accessible for all. I’m also delighted that the improvements include a raft of energy efficiency improvements as part of our commitment to tackling climate change.

“We would like to thank you for your support during the refurbishment and hope you enjoy the brand-new facilities, and thank all staff involved in delivering this project.”

Matt Eden, Freedom Leisure’s Arun Area Manager, said:

“We are delighted the changing village and family changing rooms are now complete and open to the public, knowing it will transform the customer experience. With the addition of the Changing Places toilet facilities, we really look forward to welcoming those who may have had accessibility issues previously, but can join us and fulfil our goal of improving lives through leisure.”
