No Mow May

Today is 1 May and is the time to consider not mowing your lawns.

Why? We’ve lost approximately 97% of flower-rich meadows since the 1930s which are a vital food needed by pollinators, like bees and butterflies.

While it may be tempting to trim the grass, we encourage gardeners to set aside their lawnmowers and let bee-friendly wildflowers flourish, this includes clover.

Even allowing just a small section of your lawn to grow through May can be hugely beneficial - with over 20 million gardens in the UK, even the smallest grassy patches add up to a significant proportion of our land which, if managed properly, can deliver enormous gains for nature.

Recent research supporting Plantlife's annual ‘No Mow May’ campaign suggests that adjusting mowing habits can produce ten times more nectar for bees and other pollinators.

If you don’t have a lawn, but have outdoor space, such as a balcony or patio, you can still take part! You can encourage wildlife with a pot or window box with native seed mix sprinkled in, which pollinators love.
